The project aims to develop a key metrics system for variety management that reduces the efforts of data gathering and combines the process and product perspectives.Variety management strategies can be basically devided into strategies applied at the product level and strategies used at the process level. Strategies at the process level are: component commonality, product modularity and product platforms. At the process level, there are: process comonality, process modularity, and delayed differentiation.
The technical literature that proposes key metrics to each of the variety management strategies is reviewed. The metrics found in this literature are evaluated according to specific criteria, and then further developed if necessary. The key metrics are, then, integrated into a comprehensive system that shows how key metrics are related to each oother. The key metrics system is tested with respect to its applicability in an industrial environment. It shows a high potential to capture the problems. of variety in practice.
